Why do turkeys gobble

Some birds gobble year round. Warm days in January and other winter months will sometimes result in gobbling. And sometimes they gobble just because they feel like it. Responding to turkey calls before or after hunting season can educate gobblers. After a while, the bird will associate your cry-wolf calls with humans, which may decrease your chances of a successful season.

Also, some state laws consider this [pre- and post-season calling] harassing wildlife. Hunters and photographers should check with local game wardens for exact regulations. Gobblers have a relatively small annual range, approximately acres or about one square mile.

The only problem was that my friend only stopped calling when he was on the move to a new setup and when the bird broke and eventually showed up, my friend was nowhere to be found. Had he stayed put and quit calling, that turkey would have likely died. I believe that if we can stay focused, or at least try to, on calling according to the bird and situation, we stand a better chance of taking him home with us. The least amount of calling you can get away with is the best rule of thumb.

Sometimes the least amount you can get away with might very well be a lot of calling. Turkeys will tell you how to work them if you pay attention to them.

January 31, Donald Devereaux Jarrett I guess we all would rather call plenty to a bird, to the point of excess, than to keep things to a minimum. Lesson 1: Overcalling This is one of the easiest traps to fall into in the heat of battle with a wild turkey gobbler.

Lesson 2: Out of Sight Calling One of the hardest turkeys to kill is one that gobbles little or none at all. Wind direction did not factor into gobbling activity, neither did relative humidity.

The average daily temperature played a role in gobbling activity, as birds sounded off the most when the average daily temperature was between 60 and 69 degrees. As the temperature increased, gobbling decreased.

The average barometric pressure affected gobbling activity, as well. Lower pressure, often associated with rain, meant less gobbling. Birds were most active at While adult turkeys might be too much of a bother for them, they easily prey on young turkeys because they are weak and vulnerable. When other birds or animals like crows, peacocks, owls make loud noises, male turkeys get mad or excited and make their own noises back.

So a whistle comes out as a sound to them which they must respond to. They could respond out of irritation or excitement. While hunting, you may want to make sure you are ready to kill before whistling, as this can attract toms to you. It is not unusual to hear a tom gobbling in his roost in the morning. It is usually a kind of mating call. If you are not a hunter but somehow in the bush, you may want to go to the other side of the sound.
